“We are all broken, that is how the light gets in.”
-Ernest Hemingway
Domestic violence is a painful and difficult experience for anyone to endure. Therapy can help you heal and recover so that you can focus on a brighter future whether your relationship has ended or as you continue to work through the relationship, in a way you feel is safe for you.
Domestic violence impacts the person who is the focus of the abuse, as well as that person’s child/ren who are exposed to the violence/dominance. Once you or others have identified that you are a victim of domestic violence, it can be both empowering and humbling. It’s empowering when you have words to put to your experience. It’s humbling because no one thinks they will be a victim of domestic violence.
Domestic violence can cause symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other forms of trauma. Therapy can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the elements of domestic violence to give you the context in which to better understand your personal situation. For example, the Power and Control Wheel, Cycle of Abuse and Safety Planning are all informational tools that can support your understanding and future planning whether you are still involved with your partner or the relationship has ended.
Choosing a therapist with expertise in domestic violence can enhance your healing. With an understanding of the court processes and resources available to you, your therapist can provide therapeutic intervention and direct you to helpful information for navigating Protection Orders, Domestic Relations court, Criminal court, Department of Human Services/ Dependency & Neglect court, Victim Rights, shelter, legal advocacy and more.
Adult victims and children exposed to domestic violence can benefit from individual therapy and family therapy. Even very young children can express themselves through the use of play as a means for working through their emotions and building the capacity for self-regulation. Services for children are available beginning at age 3 and up at the Children’s Wellness Center of Colorado, PLLC.
