Michelle Hammar, LPC
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a master's degree in Forensic Psychology from the University of Denver. I previously earned my BA in psychology and sociology, with a minor in criminology, from William Penn University. Originally from South Africa, I bring a multicultural lens to my work and speak English, Afrikaans, and conversational French.
In my clinical practice, I work primarily with children, adolescents, and caregivers who are navigating complex experiences. My approach is grounded in play-based, attachment-focused, and trauma-responsive care. I integrate a range of therapeutic modalities and use skills-based interventions tailored to each client's developmental and emotional needs. I am trained in and practice EMDR, and I am in the process of completing the remaining requirements for certification. My work centers on creating developmentally attuned spaces where people can explore feelings, build insight, and strengthen internal and external resources. I collaborate closely with families, schools, and multidisciplinary teams to support continuity, safety, and lasting change.
I am passionate about expanding access to mental health services and reducing stigma around help-seeking. As a former international student, I value cultural nuance and the many ways identity and experience shape healing. My long-term goals include pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology with a focus on adolescent mental health.
Outside the office, you can usually find me kickboxing, playing pickleball, or exploring creative projects that bring together colour and movement. As someone who moved here from South Africa, I still get a small thrill from discovering pieces of beauty that feel both familiar and entirely new.
